Cat's eye is part of the chrysoberyl group and is also known as Cymophane. The name "cat's eye" is given based on the optical effect, which reminds one of the pupil of a cat. Cat's eye occurs in the colour range from honey yellow, honey brown to yellowish green and bright green. The stone is cut en cabochon and produce a silverish-white line, which appears as a moving line when the stone is rotated. The cat's eye effect is caused by the fine parallel inclusions of the stone. The short term "cat's eye" usually refers to the chrysoberyl, while cat's eye effect occur in other stones must be designated by an additional name, such as "quartz cat's eye".
